At Iconergy, Doug shapes programs and projects by developing and refining our clients’ goals, and then guiding Iconergy’s overall performance in meeting or exceeding those goals. In addition, Doug directly manages select programs and projects, including government (federal, state, local) and utility energy efficiency programs, diversified energy management programs and projects for large commercial and industrial entities, and performance contracts. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis as well as a variety of industry certifications in energy management, sustainability, and process efficiency.

As Iconergy’s Director of Engineering Erik leads Iconergy’s engineering teams and provides management and technical expertise on a variety of projects, including retro-commissioning, monitoring based commissioning, controls design, energy modeling and M&V projects. Throughout his career he has made energy efficiency and facility operations the focus of his work, and he enjoys working on projects that push the envelope of energy efficiency and control strategies. Erik is an established industry leader and controls design engineer who has served many K-12, university, hospital, federal, and Fortune 500 industrial and commercial clients.
Paul Scharfenberger, Chief Finance Officer / Chief Operations Officer
Paul combines a unique and extensive background in traditional finance, operations management, and energy management and sustainability that spans more than 15 years. Paul began his career in investment banking on Wall Street before consciously transitioning to the energy field. Since joining the energy field, Paul has developed several public-private-partnerships aimed at addressing finance gaps in Colorado’s energy economy that have deployed >$100M towards energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. Most notably, Paul was the lead author on multiple pieces of legislation that enabled Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) in Colorado and he Chaired the Board of Directors that created and launched the highly successful Colorado C-PACE program. As Iconergy’s CFO/COO, Paul utilizes his full suite of professional experiences and skills to manage and oversee Iconergy’s financial and operational performance. He also evaluates innovative project finance structures that will provide Iconergy and its clients with a competitive advantage when it comes to structuring and completing energy management and design build projects.

Mike Opitz, PE, CEM, PMP, LEED AP - Director of Sustainability
Mike is a published, globally-known engineer and innovator in building sustainability and energy performance. He has 20 years’ experience in the private, public, and non-profit sectors, including nine years in senior roles. His passion to improve global sustainability drives him to manage and develop programs at scale to optimize real estate portfolio performance. Mike’s impact began with a model energy code now used in 75% of a foreign country, and continued with leading development of the LEED-EB: O&M program at USGBC. Mike deploys critical thinking, communication, and consensus-building to guide teams to improved performance by implementing and integrating proven industry best practices. His peer-reviewed publications range from his award-winning MS thesis to journal articles and conference proceedings. He has volunteered to advance sustainability causes with both non-profits and government agencies. Mike holds two MS degrees from MIT.
Scott Shulda, Director of Design Build Operations
Scott brings over 20 years of experience in providing clients a fully integrated approach to development, design, and construction services that advances project success. With Scott’s design and construction background he also brings extensive experience in risk management, project incentive programs and financial modeling. Scott’s work has mainly focused on energy and sustainable projects including energy performance contracting, turnkey design-build projects, renewable energy, and other non-traditional financial based projects. Throughout his career Scott’s main emphasis has been to work on technically challenging projects with performance-based outcomes that drive improved organizational energy and operational efficiencies. Scott has a proven track record of successful customers many of which include State, K-12, Higher Education, municipal, and private commercial clients. Scott holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering from the University of Kansas, a Master of Business Administration from Baker University, and is a Certified Energy Manager.
